Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR) - £70
The PPR course is for skippers and crew using RYA qualifications to allow them to work commercially and is compulsory for new and revalidating RYA Commercial Endorsements. As such, it is written mainly from the point of view of UK legislation and concentrates on your place in the international maritime environment as a UK certificate holder. However, it also explains the need to look beyond UK rules and regulations and take into consideration the requirements of the flag and port state.
Course content: how you fit into the professional maritime world, importance of correct manning, keeping skills up to date, safe management of commercial vessels, the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create & implement risk control.
Ability after course: An understanding that you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.
VHF Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) Course - £95 (Includes course pack)
As the main communications channel between vessels and to land stations, a VHF radio is a key piece of safety equipment, making an understanding of radio operational procedures and etiquette crucial. This covers basic radio operation, correct procedure and etiquette for channel use, emergency, distress and medical assistance broadcasts, and looks at various systems including Digital Selective Calling (DSC), Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indication Radio Beacons (EPIRB) and Search And Rescue Transponders (SART).
This course, accompanied by the RYA VHF Handbook, will take you through the training at your own speed. When you've finished all modules and practiced as much as you like you can book your final exam at our classroom which involves a written paper and practical. A £60 licence and exam fee is payable to the RYA on top of the course price. Completion of this exam awards the Lifetime VHF SRC, the minimum qualification required to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
Course content: Basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling, Global Maritime Distress Safety System.
CEVNI (Inland Waterways Course) - £50
CEVNI stands for Code Européen des Voies de Navigation Intérieure and is the code governing navigation on the interconnected European inland waterways. Signs, rules and procedures for navigating the European inland waterways are all included within the CEVNI code, and pleasure craft are expected to know and follow these. Knowing and abiding by the regulations is the best way to protect yourself and your boat and is required for an inland waters endorsed International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
The online CEVNI test is a multiple choice test of your knowledge of the rules and regulations of the European inland waterways. This includes identifying the signs and buoyage of the inland waterways and demonstrating and understanding of the sound signals, lights and shapes that are commonly used. Once you have signed up for your test you will have the opportunity to complete practice questions as much as you want before starting the real test.
